In the ancient time there was only one style of yoga which is known as hatha yoga. Hatha is composed of two words - Ha which means Sun energy and Tha which stands for Moon energy. In the Chinese tradition we also have two energies which are known as Yang (Sun energy) and Yin (Moon energy).
As a full moon or no moon affects the water in the ocean, the same way these moon cycles affect our body because the human body contains 70% water. We can balance this energy by drinking enough water and by slowing down our life. Especially in the modern time everyday life is very active, often stressful and this way of living keeps reducing the moon's energy. Moon energy is responsible for better sleep, calming the mind, concentration and many more. In Yin yoga we focus to increase the moon energy in our body by slowing down our practice and holding the pose for an extended period of time.

What is Yin yoga?

Yin yoga is a passive style of yoga. Each asana is being held for approx 3 to 5 minutes or more depending on the pose type. Here we need to completely surrender ourselves in the pose and try to bring our body and mind in harmony.
In most yoga styles or physical activities we focus on strengthening and stretching our muscles, but in yin yoga we focus on stretching the deep connective tissue like fascia, ligaments and joints to make them longer and increase elasticity and strength. This helps us to reduce the chance of injury and provide deep relaxation by increasing blood and energy circulation here. We do not only stretch the tissue itself. It also helps oneself to improve patience and concentration, as well as allows the practitioner to deepen the connection with the body and gain profound calmness of mind.
In yin yoga we hold the pose with the help of props (yoga block, cushion, blanket, etc.) to make the practice more effective. Use of props makes the practice suitable for all levels of practitioner and at the same time this is one of the best practices if someone is sick, menstruation or for the pregnancy.

The Role of Breath in Yin Yoga

Yogic breath or deep and long breathing in yin yoga helps the practitioners to connect the body and mind together with the extended hold of the poses. In yogic science when we inhale or exhale we take the prana energy (Life force) in and out not only oxygen, if in place of the body prana energy does not reach in the proper amount that part of the body start having some blockage, pain or any internal problems. Extending hold of the pose with slow movement helps to open the blockage of the energy channel.
