Ashtanga yoga is a definite sequence of various Hatha yoga Asans coupled with a certain way of breathing technique called Ujjayi Pranayama. This sequence was developed by the famous Hatha yoga master of the 20th century Yogi K Pattabhi Jois. The source of Ashtanga yoga primary series is an ancient Hatha yoga text Yoga Korunta. This ancient series is practiced with the synchronized breathing techniques (vinyasa) that promotes flow in the asana practice. Together this is called Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga style.
The Ashtanga yoga system or eight limb yoga system of Patanjali is the most famous and complete yoga system. Patanjali introduced this system in the famous yoga text Patanjali Yoga Sutra around 3000 years ago.
Patanjali was well versed in all the existing yoga styles and he saw a great confusion going on everywhere as all the principles of yoga were scattered in all different books. Patanjali decided to bring them all together in a cohesive manner so as to develop a perfect and non fallible system. It means if one follows all the eight limbs as mentioned by Patanjali he starts seeing the spiritual growth.
This system also predicts the outcome of the practices mentioned by Patanjali. Great masters of past and future appreciated this system all the time and if told that this is the complete set of guidelines and roadmap for learning yoga from the first step to the highest level of Self realization.
