Group Yoga & Ayurveda Retreat in India: A Transformative Journey in Rishikesh

For yoga teachers, studios and groups of friends who want to experience Yoga and Ayurveda where they began: what a group retreat in Rishikesh looks like, how long to stay, and how Sri Yoga Ashram builds a programme around your group.

India has long been a destination for people seeking more than an ordinary holiday. It is the birthplace of Yoga and Ayurveda, two ancient traditions that approach wellbeing through movement, breath, meditation, lifestyle, food, and an understanding of our individual nature.

For yoga teachers, studios, wellness communities and groups of friends, organising a group Yoga and Ayurveda retreat in India offers an opportunity to experience these traditions where they originated.

And among India's many destinations, Rishikesh holds a very special place.

Why Choose Rishikesh for a Group Yoga Retreat?

Known internationally as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh lies in the foothills of the Himalayas along the sacred River Ganga.

Unlike a conventional resort destination, Rishikesh offers an environment naturally connected with yoga and spiritual practice. Ashrams, temples, forests, mountains, meditation caves and the Ganga have attracted spiritual seekers for generations.

A retreat here allows participants to temporarily move away from busy routines and reconnect with a simpler rhythm of life.

At Sri Yoga Ashram, our location near the Laxman Jhula area combines convenient access to Rishikesh with a peaceful natural setting. The ashram is surrounded by Himalayan greenery, with forest behind the property, a small natural stream nearby and views towards the Ganga and surrounding mountains.

For a Yoga and Ayurveda retreat, the environment itself becomes part of the experience.

Yoga and Ayurveda: Two Traditions, One Holistic Approach

Yoga and Ayurveda developed from closely related Indian traditions.

Yoga works with the body, breath and mind through practices such as asana, pranayama, meditation and philosophy. Ayurveda focuses on understanding individual constitution, daily routines, diet, herbal preparations and traditional therapies.

Bringing the two together creates a retreat that goes beyond simply attending yoga classes.

A typical group Yoga and Ayurveda retreat may combine:

  • Morning and evening Yoga sessions
  • Pranayama and meditation
  • Yoga philosophy
  • Ayurvedic consultation
  • Individual Ayurvedic treatments
  • Abhyanga oil massage
  • Shirodhara
  • Herbal and Potli therapies
  • Swedana or herbal steam
  • Ayurvedic lifestyle guidance
  • Vegetarian meals
  • Excursions and spiritual experiences around Rishikesh
  • Time for rest, reflection and personal practice

The exact programme can be adapted according to the group's objectives, duration and experience level.

Designed for Yoga Teachers, Studios and Retreat Leaders

Organising an international retreat independently can be complicated.

Accommodation, meals, yoga spaces, teachers, Ayurvedic treatments, transportation and activities all need to work together.

A residential group retreat makes this process considerably easier.

At Sri Yoga Ashram, we work with yoga teachers, studio owners and retreat organisers who would like to bring their own students or community to India. Our group Yoga and Ayurveda retreat programmes are built around the group rather than the other way round.

You may lead some of the Yoga sessions yourself while our teachers and Ayurveda team provide additional practices, philosophy, meditation, pranayama, consultations and treatments.

Alternatively, we can develop a more complete programme in which most of the teaching and activities are arranged by the ashram.

This flexibility allows every group retreat to have its own identity.

A Sample Day at a Yoga & Ayurveda Retreat

A retreat should have structure without making participants feel that every minute of their holiday has been scheduled.

A typical day could begin with morning meditation and pranayama, followed by an energising Yoga practice and breakfast.

The middle of the day can be dedicated to Ayurvedic consultations, individual treatments, workshops or free time. Participants may relax, walk towards the Ganga, explore Rishikesh or simply enjoy the surrounding nature.

Later in the afternoon, the group can come together for philosophy, meditation or another workshop before finishing the day with an evening Yoga practice.

Dinner provides an opportunity for everyone to reconnect and share their experiences.

On selected days, the regular schedule can be changed for excursions and special activities.

Ayurvedic Treatments as a Personal Experience

One advantage of combining Ayurveda with a group Yoga retreat is that the retreat remains a shared journey while certain parts of the programme can be personalised.

Participants may receive an individual Ayurvedic consultation before treatments are planned.

Depending upon the programme, traditional therapies may include Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Udwarthanam, Patra Pinda Sweda or Potli therapy, herbal steam and other Ayurvedic procedures.

This creates an interesting balance: participants practise Yoga together as a community while experiencing Ayurveda more individually.

For groups interested in a deeper Ayurvedic experience, longer programmes can include more treatments and additional Ayurveda education, up to a full Panchakarma programme.

7-Day, 14-Day or 21-Day Group Retreats

There is no single ideal duration for a Yoga retreat.

For groups travelling internationally, we generally recommend allowing enough time to settle into the environment rather than trying to fit too much into a few days.

7-Day Retreat

Suitable for groups looking for an introduction to Yoga, meditation, Ayurveda and Rishikesh.

14-Day Retreat

A particularly balanced option for international groups. Two weeks provides enough time for regular Yoga practice, several Ayurvedic treatments, workshops, excursions and free time.

21-Day Retreat

Ideal for groups looking for a deeper immersion. A three-week retreat allows Yoga, Ayurveda and meditation to develop gradually while giving participants sufficient time for rest and integration.

Programmes can also be customised according to the group's travel plans.

Curriculum note 4 specialised streams

Sri Yoga Ashram runs its accredited 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in four specialised streams in Rishikesh: Ashtanga, Kundalini, Yin and Meditation.

Experience More Than the Yoga Mat

Coming to India should also mean experiencing India.

A group retreat can therefore include carefully selected excursions around Rishikesh.

A sunrise visit to Kunjapuri Temple offers spectacular Himalayan views and can be combined with meditation.

A visit to Vashishtha Cave, an ancient meditation place beside the Ganga, introduces participants to the contemplative tradition associated with Rishikesh.

Groups can also explore the Ganga, temples, local markets, cafés and spiritual areas around Rishikesh during their free time.

These experiences provide a valuable contrast to the structured retreat programme.

Simple, Comfortable Ashram Living

Sri Yoga Ashram is designed as an ashram and Yoga training centre rather than a luxury resort.

We believe it is important for retreat organisers and participants to understand this distinction.

Accommodation is simple, clean and comfortable. Rooms have private bathrooms, hot water and Wi-Fi, and both shared and private accommodation options can be arranged.

Vegetarian meals are served as part of the residential programme.

For participants who come to India seeking authentic Yoga practice, Ayurveda, nature and community rather than luxury hospitality, this simplicity often becomes one of the most memorable parts of the retreat.

The Advantage of a Small Group

We particularly welcome small and medium-sized Yoga groups.

A group of around 10–15 participants is large enough to create a wonderful community atmosphere while remaining small enough for individual attention.

Retreat leaders can spend meaningful time with their students, Yoga teachers can interact directly with participants, and Ayurvedic treatments can be organised individually.

This creates a very different experience from attending a large commercial wellness resort.

A Retreat Your Group Can Call Its Own

Every Yoga community is different.

Some groups want physically intensive asana practice. Others are more interested in meditation and philosophy. Some want Ayurveda to be central to the retreat, while others prefer just a few treatments alongside their Yoga holiday.

For this reason, we prefer customised group retreat programmes rather than forcing every group into exactly the same schedule.

Depending on your group, a retreat can emphasise:

  • Yoga & Meditation: for groups seeking deeper practice and inner exploration.
  • Yoga & Ayurveda: combining daily Yoga with Ayurvedic consultations and treatments.
  • Yoga & Panchakarma: for longer stays with greater emphasis on traditional Ayurvedic procedures.
  • Yoga Teacher-Led Retreats: where visiting teachers conduct their own classes while we provide accommodation, meals, facilities, Ayurveda and local support.
  • Wellness & Spiritual Retreats: combining gentle Yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, nature and Rishikesh experiences.

Why Organise Your Yoga & Ayurveda Retreat in India?

There are beautiful retreat centres throughout the world. But travelling to India offers something different.

Your students are not simply attending Yoga classes in another country. They are entering the cultural and spiritual environment from which Yoga and Ayurveda developed.

Practising pranayama while surrounded by the Himalayan foothills, meditating near the Ganga, experiencing traditional Ayurvedic treatments and sharing daily life with a small Yoga community can turn a retreat into a much deeper journey.

For many participants, it may be their first visit to India.

For some, it will not be their last.

Bring Your Group to Rishikesh

Tell us your preferred dates, number of participants, duration, accommodation preference and the type of Yoga and Ayurveda experience you would like to offer.

From there, we can develop a customised retreat programme including accommodation, vegetarian meals, Yoga practices, meditation, pranayama, Ayurveda treatments, consultations and selected excursions.

Come with your students. Practise beside the Himalayas. Experience Yoga and Ayurveda in the land where these traditions began.
